The Sihanoukville Autonomous Port (SAP), Cambodia’s largest shipping facility, has seen an 18- percent increase in cargo shipments in the first half of 2014, data from the port showed Saturday.

About 1.79 million tons of goods had been transported through the port during the January-June period this year, up 18 percent from 1.51 million tons over the same period last year, the data said.

Cargos imported into Cambodia included garment raw materials, autos, construction materials, machinery, petroleum, and daily consuming products, while items exported from Cambodia were apparel, shoes, and agricultural products.

According to the data, the country had imported 575,600 tons of petroleum through the port during the first half of this year, up 13 percent over the same period last year.

SAP’s deputy director general Ma Sunhuot said the continued growth in cargo shipments was thanks to better economic situation and business climate.

“We saw a particular increase in the exports of garments and footwear,” he said. “On the import side, there was a surge in construction materials and petroleum.”

Garment and footwear industry is the kingdom’s largest foreign exchange earner.

The country exported apparel and shoes worth 2.92 billion U.S. dollars during the first six months of this year, up 16 percent over the same period last year, according to a report from the Commerce Ministry last week.
